What an amazing website you have (thanks to Hugo Tyler for sending us his latest news update that prompted us to find it).

We had a wonderful time during our recent 5-day visit to Symi in October 2007; it was a real pleasure to meet you. It was immediately obvious from the photos on display that your ideas about what is worthy of a photograph match ours (although I must admit that your techniques are on a much higher plain).

Kaye took the first of the attached photos (A photo like Neil's). Imagine our great surprise to see your version of the same local architecture staring us in the face at the top of "your latest blog" - Symi Dream bliary.

I loved the email about the heart rate decreasing until the ferry turns the corner. Mine does the opposite. That first sight of Yialos always gets to me even after all these years. Back for four weeks this September. Whatever can we do for that long? I expect we'll think of something. Still love looking at these photos, especially those showing people, and trying to identify them. Richard Parker

Your website is almost a part of my daily routine. I check it often. I love it. My family is from Symi, but I live in America. Unlike other websites, you post many pictures of people and not just scenery. I was so excited to see some of my family members (after two years) on your website! Thank you. Maria.
February 15h Just wanted to say that the unfortunate demise of Laskarina hasn't stopped us coming back to Symi for what will be our 7th time.  We've decided to do it ourselves this time - on the basis that we know the routine now - fly into Rhodes ensuring you arrive in plenty of time, get bus or taxi to Rhodes commercial harbour and then get the Symi ferry around 6.00 pm - see the sun setting en route, the heart rate decreases steadily until you turn "the corner" and see those neo-Classical houses climbing up the hillside - the lights shimmering in the darkness.  I can picture it now - it's the one thing that keeps me going from the end of May to the middle of May each year.  Roll on 16th May - looking forward to a drink in Lefteris bar underneath the vine, spot of dinner at Georgios and a wander back up the few steps to Lefteris again on our first evening ready to enjoy the peace and tranquility of Symi for our annual two week pilgrimage.

Hi James,

Sorry to hear about your earworms (sounds nasty!)
As a cleanser try replacing whatever tune you are stuck with with the theme to the Pink Panther (you know the one - Henry Mancini)
After a couple of repeats the Pink Panther theme should fade away., along with the original 'infestation'
Give it a try

Warm Regards

Alan

PS Not my idea - I read this elsewhere, but it does seem to work

Hi !

Having just returned from a great week in Chorio on Symi, I wondered if anyone has photos of the elusive Symi spider ! We managed to spot one in the late evening last week but the 2 pics we took were out of focus and no-one believes that they really are as large as they are !

Regards,

Ian Johnstone

Hi

Sorry to bother you, you've got a gorgeous picture (HERE) but whereabouts in Symi was it taken as I don't recognise it?*

We visited Symi last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's such a beautiful Island. We also bought a photo from your gallery. It was a one off, a photo inside a church and you distorted it so it was just an array of colours. It looks great in our house.

We will hopefully visit Symi next year as we have fallen in love with the island and don't want to stay away from it for too long.

Kind regards

Jane

Hello James & Neil
Love the website- I enjoyed reading James Village View , keep up the good work. Sorry I can't figure out the competition will have another go next time.

We enjoyed a delious meal at the Windmill last week and send Rhiannon our best wishes for a successfull season. The slow cooked roast veg and the almond cake with brandy cream were delicious so I'm on the scrounge for the recipes - its our 30 wedding anniversary this year and we are inviting friends to ours for a BBQ and want to give them a taste of Symi.

As a side line to her business Rhiannon could compile a recipe book of customers favorites and have it on sale in her restaurant, I would certainly buy it!

The little pictures I bought from the art shop are now on my kitchen wall and will always remind me of sunny Symi.

Back to work now and the cold and rain of Manchester, see you all in the not too distant future.

Regards and best wishes

Nov 16th Dear friends on Symi.... summer is over, but I heard, weather is still fine in the south... we here in Munich expect the first winterdays...it´s cold already, tomorrow the first snow is predicted...brrrrr...

Time to surf the web, and accidently I found Symidream-site!

Makes me dream ;-)

Remembering our marriage in June at the Diamarchio, having our friends and families there, the boat trip to Agia Marina and the planting of the olive-tree, that Mercurios says he is taking care of since ;-)

The greek lessons and conversations with Leda, the fantastic dinner at Aktaion´s terrace prepared and served by Stavros himself... we visited our friends Roula and Takis and partied with Manos and too much "Raki" some
weeks after.

Now, with all that sentimental feelings, we forgive Symi the noise of too many cars, the (dangerous!) racing motorbikes with sound´s that can make you deaf (and might kill someone one day...), the Port Police complaining at 12 in the night about a little Discomusic coming from Aktaion´s terrace (our marriage party), while some weeks later the Bars (empty nearly...) had loud music on till 3 in the night... forgiven....

We will come back, of course, and moore again in the harbour - and hopefully the mayor and people of Symi will find until then a solution for that problem of noise-pollution and parking-mess and the bikes´ racing.(fortunately I am not the only "complaining" person about that, which might help)

>From here, cold Munich/Germany, we send all our best wishes to Symi and wish you a nice and calm winter.
See you in springtime, sure!

Have a good time!

Regards

James,

Thanks for your speedy reply.
The Opera House sounds familiar, but then again we have done a fair amount of on the spot research when looking for rooms on previous visits so I cannot be sure.
I was looking through some photos of previous visits hoping to glimpse some feature that would help pin point the rooms. I only managed to find a couple showing the steps leading up to the rooms. Typical white painted risers nautrally but what might help is the 3 steps turning right from the main flight onto a red half iron entrance gate near the bottom and then at the top leading to the first storey entrance area.

Also at the top of the flight of steps is a fairly high stone wall behind which are a number of large cactus plants are growing. The building itself is white with mustard coloured balconies (2 facing onto the street below with a small seating area nearest the steps) surrounded by black ironwork and an old grapevine.
The only other thing I can remember were a number of lemon trees on the other side of the narrow street, about 10 yards down the hill. They are behind a low wall and a chain link fence. I remember because one escaped into my gin and tonic one evening!
Still, I think an easier solution is finding the owner. Each time I have met him we are always taken to the same rooms so I am assuming this may be the only property he has for visitors. Having thought more about the location of his store I can only recall it was fairly long and narrow with the cash desk immediately on your left as you walk in.
What I do know is that when standing at the end of the bridge (Gold shop side) if you were to walk between the large outdoor restaurant on your right and the buildings which are set forward around the harbour his store is situated on the left hand corner. Or 40ish degrees East at a distance of no more than 10-15 yards. Barring GPS co-ordinates that’s me done, and once again apologies for the length of this post, lessons will are being learnt for any subsequent visit!
James, thanks again for helping me with this.

Am returning again to Symi at the start of September. This year both My finacee and her Mum and dad and their best friends will be enjoying the trip with us. Although I have now visited Symi on I think 5 or 6 occasions I always seem to misplace the names of the accommodation we stayed in. I was hoping I could enlist the help of other visitors on this forum.

There is one particular group of rooms we particularly liked. After leaving the ferry and walking past Pat & Ali’s bar (p.s if anyone has Pats email I would be grateful, again something else I managed to misplace) carry straight on past the bridge past the square and the Disco on the left. There are if I remember correctly 1 or two boats (or bits off boats just off to your left. Heading that way there is then a couple of steps leading to a narrow street heading uphill which is just to the right of the restaurant with the raised narrow seating area at the front (I think the last time we went 2 years ago that restaurant was then closed) Only a matter of 10-15 yards up the hill there are a number of 2 or 3 storey buildings, the first is locally inhabited the second are the rooms I am trying to book, phew………
The owner has a store by the bridge (telephone kiosk side) outside the store or just to the left of it are a number of barrow stalls selling dried herbs and the like. I cannot for the life of me remember the owner, nor his son but if it helps are would say they were about 65 and 30 respectively, hoping to do nobody a disservice here ;-)
If all this sounds familiar and you have the name and telephone number, or as mentioned Pat and Ali’s email I would be extremely grateful.

P.S don’t usually book ahead, or plan anything really but with 6 this year getting us all in the one spot might be tricky.
If we cannot find accommodation there any other recommendations for air-con rooms around the harbor would be welcomed.
Thanks again, and apologies for the length of this post

I am returning to Symi for a second time with my best friend and her husband. I will never forget the view as you enter the harbour at Yialos. We are staying at Hotel Fiona this year. Kali Strata here we come! I have looked at the Symi visitor website nearly every day since we returned last year. So looking forward to returning to paradise!
