The association of creative artists on Symi
Was started by Aruni in July 2006 and already has over 25 members. The group meets regularly to discuss ideas for exhibitions and future projects. It also serves to support local artists (anyone who creates work in any artistic medium from paintings to poetry) and is currently working towards finding a permanent exhibition space for local artists to display their work.

Neil's write up about the event is below:

Six weeks ago a local Greek lady, Aruni, came up to me with an idea. The idea was to form a group of local creative people so that we could all exhibit our art and hopefully to get EU grants so that we could get a permanent place to show them. Also, maybe get a grant to teach the local children how to be creative. I thought it was a good idea and that she should go ahead with it. One week later there were posters all over the place advertising the fact that there was going to be a meeting up in Horio for creative people and if anybody was interested, to come along.
            From little acorns...
After a few more meetings we decided to put on an exhibition in my gallery to show off the diversity and the talent of the people in the group. It was amazing. Everybody did something. A sign was made and put up that hovered over the kali strata. One side was in English and the other side Greek, advertising the event. We had food and drink, the drink was given to us via the mayor. Invitations were given out left right and centre. Everybody offered their help to get the exhibition ready in time, but can you imagine about 20 different artists all in one space trying to put up there art work? It would have been a complete nightmare, so I asked a friend of mine, Terri, also an artist, to help me put everything up. She was fantastic and I wouldn’t have been able to do it with out her help. So a big thank you to her.
Sunday the 24th September arrived and for the first time in months the heavens opened. It poured down with rain. It wouldn’t have been so bad but, and there’s always a but, we were also going to be doing a slide show outside. I had phone call after phone call asking if the exhibition was still going ahead as planned. Being very British I said yes, we had two priests booked to come along and bless the group and the gallery, the show must go on.
It stopped raining at roughly 4 o’clock. The time for things to start was 7. Various different people of the group started to turn up at 5 o’clock to help out with last minute things.
If you want to know how the evening went, you can look at my photographs.
